A cherished friendship

Giris. Where do I begin! Though we lived in two different continents, we have numerous memories with Giris, all of them unique and most memorable.

I always wondered how someone so absent minded could be so thoughtful and caring. He was full of what-you-may-call-its and what's-his-names but he never ever forgot what really mattered. He always remembered what each of us likes and went out of his way to make us feel special. I remember traipsing behind him one day with my daughters as he carried on one of his endless phone conversations. I thought we were mindlessly walking along the streets, but of course Giris had the knack of finding just the perfect shop or restaurant in the most obscure place and he was taking us to buy something I had just mentioned casually to him!

When our daughters were studying in London he took care of them, accompanying them to the doctor or just taking them out for a fun outing. It's amazing how he interacted with each of us at a different level and made us all feel we were most special to him!

He was always there for me when it mattered the most. Every time I underwent a surgery he would call often and check on me. When I lost my father, he was the one who gave me the answer I needed. The telepathy between our families was strong and his messages, either jokes, profound advice or a prayer, were always what I needed just then.

Every outing with Giris was unique and I know we could never make such memories with anyone else. From parking on double red lines, to opening a sealed display jar in Harrods to check the quality of goose down, he was a person like no other. Countless delectable meals with him were the perfect setting for the most meaningful, heartfelt conversations on myriad topics. The most beautiful soul I have had the pleasure of knowing, he was stubborn, argumentative, infuriating, and most thoughtful, loving and caring. A kindred soul, Giris was a friend like no other.

I will miss him very, very much, but I give thanks for having had him in my life. I pray he is at peace, I know he is smiling down at all of us. - Nidhya
