Food for Yogins

On the first day of the trip we took the ferry to Belgium.  We had three vehicles: the bus, a jeep, and a Mercedes Ambulance.  Giris was driving the bus and led the caravan through very narrow streets through the center of Brussels.  Swami Vishnuji was with us, and told me to ask Giris (who was in the separate driver's compartment) why were going through town.  Giris replied, "to get the best chocolate".  I relayed this, fearing a negative reaction. But Swamiji just said okay, like it was most logical thing in the world.  Obviously they were on the same page when it came to chocolate.

A week or so later we had left Munich and crossed in Austria and reached a high cold mountain pass of on the boarder to what was then Yugoslavia.  We were parked with a great number of trucks/lorries waiting to go through customs. Giris went out to talk to some of the drivers to get a better of what we encounter when we descended. He was gone so long that the rest of us had already had dinner and went to bed. I was awake reading and heard a pounding on the bus's door.  It was Giris with boxes of pastries.  He had gotten a ride down the mountain into town and back with one of the drivers.  I asked him why he bothered to spend some much time getting pastries. He then asked me "What is Yugoslavia famous for?"  I couldn't think of an answer.  Giris then said "That's why I bought pastries in Austria".
