Giris, my friend

Created by Nidhya 3 years ago
I met Giris almost 40 years ago. Naturally, it being Giris, we met for the most extraordinary and memorable reason!

Giris was with the Sivananda Yoga Ashram at the time, and he had driven a double decker London bus all the way from the UK to India! On their way from Kerala to Trichy, they were  hit by another bus and the double decker suffered considerable damage.

No body builder was willing to touch it and  so, my friend Suresh Balaji, brought Giris to me. I had the wood work and aluminum repaired and that marked what was the beginning of a long, eventful and most memorable friendship with Giris.

There was no end to the things Giris could organise, and he was always most enthusiastic in all he did! We were shooting a song for one of our films and I needed to find dancers.

Giris rose to the occasion as always! He placed an advertisement and organised a dance floor in the Islington Post office that he was developing. He set up an audition and casting floor in the sorting floor and supervised the audition of almost 300 dancers!! After that he arranged transportation for them and joined me in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia for the shooting.

Giris and I have done so many crazy things together and enjoyed every single minute of it all! Unlike any other friend who lives overseas, he flew to Chennai for both my daughters’ weddings and I went to Toronto for Amari’s wedding too.

The memories flood my mind. I could go on for hours! Giris was always a very good friend to me and I will miss him deeply. I pray he is at peace. - Guhan
